Pediatric Ophthalmology

Children’s eye issues are unique, necessitating specialized care that differs markedly from the needs of adults. The vision problems encountered in childhood can affect development and learning, making early detection and management critical. The American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) emphasizes the importance of early eye assessments, recommending that children receive their first comprehensive eye examination by the age of three, or before they begin school. This early screening is vital to identify any visual problems that may hinder a child’s educational and social development.

Amblyopia (lazy eye)

In this condition, the vision in one or both eyes is diminished compared to normal levels. The leading causes typically include refractive errors, misalignment of the eyes, or visual deprivation due to a blockage in front of the eyes. The likelihood of recovery is highest if treatment begins during the critical period for visual development, usually up until 8 years of age. However, recent studies suggest there may be potential for vision improvement up to the age of 17.

Approximately one quarter of these cases can see significant improvement with just the prescription of suitable eyeglasses. For most children, treatment involves patching the stronger eye to encourage the use of the weaker one, particularly during close-up tasks for a few hours each day, depending on the severity of their vision loss. Another method involves using eye drops to temporarily blur vision in the stronger eye. This approach can be challenging as children may resist using their weaker eye due to the poorer vision experienced and therefore require considerable support and encouragement from their parents.
